Occupational Therapy (OT) is the use of assessment and treatment to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and work skills of people with physical, mental, or cognitive disorders.
Our team of occupational therapists and therapy assistants provides individualised therapy programmes to optimise patients’ levels of independence and ultimately lead to discharging patients back to living within their local community.
Occupational Therapists focus on identifying and eliminating environmental barriers to independence and participation in daily activities by adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching new skills and educating the patient/family in order to increase participation in and performance of daily activities
The Action Van service facilitates environmental adaptations to patients’ homes to improve independence and reduce the risk of falls. This collaborative project between The Royal Hospital Donnybrook, St. Vincent’s University Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital and St. Columcille’s Hospital continues to facilitate timely discharges from hospital relieving bed pressure in all four hospitals.

Speech & Language Therapy
Our speech and language therapists provide specialised treatment, support, and care to patients and residents experiencing communication, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties. Working with other health care professionals in multidisciplinary teams, the therapist works closely with patients, residents and their families to establish a treatment programme to manage the eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties they are experiencing.
Speech & Language Therapists also work with patients and residents who cannot communicate through normal means, to develop alternative forms of communication or assist in the use of specialised computer devices.
