Sheltered Housing

The Royal Hospital Donnybrook established its own Voluntary Housing Association (VHA) to create and run sheltered housing for older people and adults with disabilities.  In 1993, the VHA opened 29 small bungalows in a development called Cullenswood, situated in Ranelagh.  Residents live independently, but have access to a warden in case of emergencies.  In 2008, the VHA expanded with the acquisition of 20 apartments in the Bloomfield Park development in Donnybrook.  Up to five of these apartments offer supported living for adults with disabilities.

Applicants for most units must be eligible to be on the Dublin City Council housing list, or be on the homeless list.  However, the VHA also has a small number of units for those who are not eligible for the housing lists.  For these units, the VHA makes a "key money" charge, in addition to the rent.  The VHA keeps rent as low as possible.

There is tremendous demand for all of this accommodation and vacancies arise infrequently.
