Day Hospital

The Day Hospital is a local accessible service that aims to promote patients’ independence, health and well-being.   The service is provided by a multidisciplinary team committed to rehabilitation, health education, and empowerment of service users.   Nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, and medical support is provided for up to 25 older people each day, Monday to Friday.   Each of the three consultant geriatricians attend one afternoon a week to review the progress of patients.

Day Hospital patients come from their own homes, usually once a week, using their own transport or on our accessible bus.   Patients generally attend the Day Hospital after having been a patient in our rehabilitation wards, but a few are referred directly by the consultants following a consultation at St. Vincent's University Hospital.   Attendance at the Day Hospital can play a vital role in keeping older people in their own home.

Some patients are initially reluctant to attend, either because they have already been in hospital for some time, or because they have preconceived ideas about a 'day hospital' that may not reflect reality.   When they come, they invariably find that the Day Hospital provides a positive atmosphere, with supportive staff who strive to meet the needs of each individual. Refreshments and lunch are provided.

The Day Hospital currently provides services five days a week from 9.30am to 4.00pm.   Potential patients can visit the unit, but before accessing the service each patient must be seen by a consultant geriatrician.   A GP referral is required to obtain a consultant geriatrician outpatient appointment.
